A Chicken Cheesesteak is a delicate balance of chicken that is chunky enough to not turn to mush when grilled, but not so chunky that it becomes a grilled chicken sandwich. And two local shops are neck-‘n'-neck for the title of best. Winner by barely a nose is Capriotti's Sandwich Shop in Lewes. I like mine with lettuce, tomato, mayo, extra pickles and extra hot pepper spread. So far, it has been perfect every time I have ordered — to go or attacked on the premises. One additional factor in Capriotti's favor is that they will add hot pepper rings to your chicken or beef when it is on the grill. If you like things spicy, this will do it for you (still add the cherry pepper spread, of course).
A very (very) close second is the winner of “The Best … Italian Sub” category, Casapulla's South, behind Buffalo Wild Wings near the Giant. Same fresh bread, same care in construction, and same toppings as Capriotti's. In fact, the competition was so close (we were forced to conduct several careful evaluations!) that even small daily differences (like a different person making the sub) could flip first and second place in a flash. But, on a personal note, they don't have the pepper rings I can get at Capriotti's. More of a personal thing, but I thought I'd share….
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the chicken cheesesteak at Pete's Steak Shop in Rehoboth Marketplace in Rehoboth (near Michy's). Chicken is marinated and there's a hint of Greek influence in the taste. Served on a softer roll than they used to have, which makes it even better.
