Ledo's, the iconic Maryland pizzeria, is opening on Rehoboth Avenue right next to Rita's (a perfect combination!).
Ledo's started back in the '60s in Adelphi, just minutes from the University of Maryland College Park campus. If I had a nickel for every evening I spent in there over pizza and pitchers with friends and classmates I'd probably be able to open a Ledo's of my own. Maybe even several.
A couple of Ledo's opened and closed nearby. The first one to open locally was in Dewey Beach, owned by Sue & Richard Krick, who eventually became the second owners of Summer House. The second Ledo's, owned by Marty McDonnell, was opened in 2011 in the Midway Galleria strip center in the space where Crust & Craft is now located.
There is a very successful Ledo's in Ocean City at 127th St., another in West OC, and a more recently opened one in Bethany Beach.
We are hoping the new Ledo's on The Avenue will last a while. I love Ledo's Pizza, but it's only natural that various franchisees' pizzas will vary slightly. Hopefully this new one will stick to the thin, layered pastry-style crust with not-too-much sauce, definitely rectangular (except for the small one which is round) and loaded with thick-sliced pepperoni. That's what makes Ledo's pizzas different from the hundreds of other pies out there. And we Marylanders know the difference.
