Weis Markets Open

/ Updated on October 19, 2016

Our four local Food Lion grocery stores (Lewes, Millville, Rehoboth Beach and Long Neck) have closed for good, but reopened on  Friday 10/14 as Weis Markets.

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets is a Mid-Atlantic food retailer operating 171 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Virginia and now Delaware.

The ownership of Giant Food reached a deal with the owner of the Food Lion stores (Delhaize) to merge. In all, over 80 stores will be involved in this deal, and some may be sold off to other grocery store operators.

Former Food Lion employees were the first to be rehired during this process.

Wishing they would take over the Food Lion in Millsboro,. It needs a make over!!!!

Noooo! Don’t tell me they’re closing Milton! I loved going there. Was right around the corner and allowed me to easily pick up groceries without having to haul into Lewes!

No, I did not tell you that. I said that Milton was not mentioned in the press release I was sent, and I was just assuming that. I will keep an eye out for information as this unravels and I’ll post an update if I hear anything about Milton.

About two months ago, an employee at the Milton Food Lion told me that store was not going to be sold, and would not be closed. Unless something has changed, that makes sense. The US government antitrust requirement that the newly merged entity must sell competing (same town) stores where both a Food Lion and a Giant or Martin’s co-exist would not apply to Milton. We have a Food Lion, but not a Giant. Hopefully we still will once the dust settles. The same employee correctly listed the other Lower Delaware Food Lions which were going to be sold (not closed) though a buyer had not been named at that point.

    You forgot Milton too.

You also forgot the Food Lion in Milton, my go to store. We exist on Milton, there is more to LSD than Rehoboth and below.

    • The Rehoboth Foodie The Rehoboth Foodie says:

See my reply above. I could be wrong, but I got my information from the Giant people and I assume it’s right.

  6. Sean says:

    You forgot Lewes…
