Chicken Ed Honored in Dewey

/ Updated on September 11, 2016

In the middle of the night on the morning of Aug. 9th, a car ran into “Chicken Ed's” – Ed's Chicken & Crabs in Dewey Beach,  burst into flames and totally destroyed the iconic Dewey Beach eatery. The woman who crashed her car into the building was apparently quite inebriated and was traveling south at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the car, bounced over the median strip and crashed into the building. The 83-year-old owner was filmed by Delaware Online saying, “I don't think I'll rebuild. I'm 83 – probably time to get out anyway.” The building was over 50 years old and all it took was one careless, speeding drunk driver to bring it to an end. Nobody was in the building at the time. On Wednesday August 24, Ed Riggin was honored for his longtime presence in Dewey. The event took place at The Starboard, complete with custom-made T-shirts and commentary from Senator Ernie Lopez and Speaker of the House Pete Schwartzkopf. Donations were collected for the restaurateur.
