Starboard Raw

/ Updated on October 29, 2018

The former location of Scully's Ocean Side Cafe at 2000 Coastal Highway in Dewey now hosts the new Starboard Raw, a 48-seat raw bar venue with a limited menu and lots of raw bar options. This is an expansion of the ever-popular Starboard Restaurant and Bar, one of the properties owned and operated by an investment group headed up by Steve “Monty” Montgomery. Some members of that restaurant group also operate and manage 99 Sea Level in the Marriott Suites on the boardwalk in Bethany Beach.

Manager Pat Coleman worked for 15 years as a barkeep at The Starboard, so he's hittin' the ground running when it comes to Dewey clientele. Lew from Baltimore cut his teeth at Nick's Fish House and Nick's Cross Street Market in Baltimore, and he is personally overseeing the raw bar. The craft brew lineup is amazing.

So far, we have enjoyed the Old Baltimore Crab Soup – a light tomato base is kicked up with Smithfield ham! We also like the fried oyster po'boy and the amazing blackened salmon sandwich. One of the stars of the the small plates menu is the Brown Sugar-Rubbed Salmon (see it in the photo gallery). We also got the mac & cheese, which is definitely a sleeper. One of the things we like the most is that they serve the Lobster Roll with the lobster simply warm and buttered. You can get the mayo if you want, but try it plain. Reminds us of Neptune Oyster on Salem St. in Boston's North End.

There are 7 entrees from which to choose, 7 sandwiches, three big salads and 7 sides (again -get the mac & cheese!). Fourteen small plates from $7 to $12 are quite generous. Get the Calamari rings (pickled cherry pepper rings are breaded and mixed in!), the Fried green Tomatoes (topped with lump crab) and the cute little crab cakes (quite flavorful, with mustard on the side).

Starboard Raw is at 2000 Coastal Highway, next to Baked Bakery, across the street from the mothership, The Starboard. They are open 7 days 11:30a until 1a. They can be reached at 302-227-9000.

Just tried the Raw. I’m surprised you liked the calamari. That was the only dish we did not like. The rings were tiny and the calamari was overdone inside. They Had no taste at all. The peppers were just two on the whole dish. Everything else was great. We had the salmon sandwich, the old Bay hog wings, fish bites and the oysters were great. We’ll be back.
