Jake’s Seafood House (vegetarian review)

/ Updated on December 20, 2016

For the longest time I resisted going to Jake’s Seafood House, because if you look online, there’s nothing vegetarian on the menu.  Okay… maybe a salad.. but that wasn’t enough to entice me. My next door neighbors go quite often and love it, so I joined them one evening and was glad I did.  This is another restaurant that’s fun to go and sit at the bar (Coastal Highway location). The bar here is a huge octagonal configuration surrounded by booths. And the bartenders are great.

They have a lengthy happy hour here Monday – Friday from 3 -7 pm. For your non-veggie friends, there’s Crab Cake Sliders / Steamed Mussels / Peel n Eat Shrimp / Cheeseburger / Wings all for $5-6. For you – there’s a mini cheese pizza for $5. It’s not bad – but I tend to order a baked potato and a side salad instead, and I’m a happy girl.  But that may be because I’ve also ordered an Orange Crush (just $5 during happy hour, as of this writing).

Salads on the regular menu include Jake’s House Garden Salad (romaine and green leaf lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, red onions, tomatoes, croutons, homemade parmesan-herb vinaigrette), the Wedge (romaine lettuce, blue cheese dressing, blue cheese crumbles, bacon–order without–and tomatoes), Spring Salad (field greens, dried cranberries, toasted almonds, gorgonzola cheese, tomatoes, pomegranate acai vinaigrette), the Tomato Caprese (vine ripe tomato, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, red onion, balsamic reduction, and finally the Caesar. I tend not to order Caesar salads because the dressing usually contains raw egg and Worcestershire sauce (which contains anchovy oil).

On my way out the door I checked with the front desk to see what they could offer vegetarians. They said they could make either of their new pasta dishes meatless – the Shrimp Alfredo, or the Shellfish Pomodoro. So you could have linguine pasta with Parmesan alfredo sauce or with a Pomodoro red sauce. One of the front desk regulars said if you called ahead, they’d be happy to make you something special. And after all, you are something special.

Are you going to do veggie reviews for all the new food on Wilmington Ave.? My wife checks your listings all the time, but there’s nothing new for a while. She is thinking about getting a burger somewhere.
